Res publica - res christiana? Biblical motivation and the Czech Brethren's perspective of christian political engagement

This diploma thesis entitled Res publica - res christiana? Biblical motivation and the Czech Brethren's perspective of christian political engagement deals with possible theological basis for Christian political engagement. The first chapter maps the biblical principles and passages inspiring the work of Christians in today's society. In the second chapter, the author deals with the life and work of the most important czech protestant theologian of the 20th century J. L. Hromádka. On specific examples of his public activities and theological statements, the author shows the key ideas and experiences that form the approach to this issue still present in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Both of these chapters form the basic basis for the author's final chapter, which outlines his own theological perspective. He put this perspective in the context of personal experience with political activism in defense of liberal democracy in the Czech Republic.

The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz

This thesis, called The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz, concerns the political theology of J. B. Metz. The first part summarizes the influences, which shaped his theological thinking and it presents his concept of political theology. The next part asks a question about the relationship between the ideas of redemption and emancipation in Metz's theology. This is based on the interpretation of a chapter from his book, Glaube in Geschichte und Gesellschaft, which concerns the topic. But before the interpretation of Metz's text, the problems of relationship between the two terms and of their origin are described. The extent of the field of meaning of the term "emancipation" is illustrated by the examples of the thinking of Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx and Jürgen Habermas. A large part is dedicated to the figures of the Frankfurt school, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, and their specific approach to the idea of emancipation and the Enlightenment tradition. The final thesis rejects the opinion, that the ideas of emancipation and redemption in Metz's theology coincide too much and it puts stress on the importance of the term "history of suffering" for solving this problem of Metz's theology. The Benefits and Limits of Democratization of Mysticism of Dorothee Sölle

The bachelor's thesis "The benefits and limits of democratization of mysticism of Dorothee Sölle" seeks to present the concept of democratization of mysticism of protestant theologian Dorothee Sölle and to suggest the benefits and limits of that theological concept. To achive this aim I decide to present her theological basics from the begining of hers work untill the end of her life. I show on her theological development which includes periods of theology of God's death, liberation theology and feminist theology a assumptions for the concept of democratization of mysticism, which is a part of her late book Mysticism and resistance. The book is a ideological basis for the main part of my thesis, which deals with topic of mysticism and civic activism. I will reflect on the concept of democratization in relation to political acting and mysticism. Mysticism acording to Sölle is open to everyone and it is not privilege of spiritual elites in any sense. At the end of the thesis I summarize a possible benefits and limits of this original theological concept.

Apoštol Pavel a filosofie: Studie k politické teologii a její recepci v soudobé filosofii

The thesis offers an interpretation of Paul's political thought and political theology in the context of current philosophy. The first part presents a methodological basis of the work: the concept of political theology is conceived as a methodological tool that enables us to concentrate on interrelations and mutual effects of religion and politics and to expose implicit or explicit political meanings and implications of religious ideas. The second methodological subchapter deals with Max Weber's approach to "economic ethics of world religions": Weber concentrates on historical crossroads and switches which are a result of random chain of coincidences and factors forming a specific relation to values (Wertbeziehung) which enables us to understand further historical development. Paul's missionary activity and theology is seen as such historical crossroad with far- reaching social consequences. Another part elaborately deals with the most important and influential interpretations of Paul in current non-Christian philosophy: Jacob Taubes, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben. The attention is given not only to presentation of their interpretations but also to utilizations and interpretative gaps, which could be observed in the way these authors read and understand Paul. Vzestup náboženství v mezinárodních vztazích (Religion's Rise in IR)

This work attempts to identify the sources of the difference between the Christian Left and Right; How is it possible that people who share such a detailed creed can be so strictly opposed when it comes to politics? My hypothesis is that the conflict is engendered by different conceptions of will and the body. To test this hypothesis, I first present a brief history of the relationship between Christianity and politics up to the present state of the Christian versions of Right and Left, to finally find that while their understanding of human will is virtually identical, the human body is seen in opposing terms. Nevertheless, I equally conclude that the division between Right and Left is inaccurate, because both strive for the same - to prevent the monopolization of power by either the State or the Market.
